Solar lights
What are solar lights?
As a light using solar electricity, solar electricity is converted from sunlight through solar panels to store in a rechargeable battery during the day and at night. Uses stored electricity for lighting.
That is why the lights that solar lights bring high economic efficiency and environmental protection benefits, use endless electricity for lighting.
Today, the technology of manufacturing solar panels and lights has been very developed, making many advances, so the price is very cheap and the quality is quite stable, the lights work with high efficiency and durability.
Solar lighting systems are known for their high energy efficiency, high reliability, maintenance-free and considerable practical value.
LEDs are preferred due to their higher energy efficiency than traditional incandescent bulbs - LEDs consume 5 times less power to provide the same amount of light as conventional incandescent bulbs!

How are solar lights powered?
A solar panel receives the sun's irradiation during the sunny hours of the day and converts the light energy into solar electrical energy stored in the battery. In the evening, the battery will begin to discharge by supplying its reserve power to the LED.
In solar lights, the controller acts as a “smart controller" rather than a pure battery charge controller. In addition to preventing the battery from overcharging and over-discharging, it also takes care of properly power the light sources and adjust their illumination. When it is almost dark, the lights are usually turned on by means of a darkness detection circuit (sunlight sensor) usually integrated with the controller control.
As we mentioned before, in the solar lighting system, LEDs are commonly used, as they provide more brightness and are more energy efficient than traditional bulbs.
Some applications where solar lights are used:
- Traffic lights and street lights.
- Park lights and garden lights.
- Public transport billboard.
- Parking.
- Protect assets and remote areas.
- Building site.
- Security or safety lighting of restricted access areas.
- The need for temporary or backup lighting where electrical wiring can be vulnerable to rain damage or possible theft.
Why are solar lights a good choice?
Solar lighting systems are becoming more and more popular, because they:
- Can work as long as it is installed where it is likely to receive direct sunlight.
- Highly efficient - solar lights are a cost-effective solution if you need adequate lighting for your garden at night.
- Easy to install. Solar lighting systems do not require trenching and cable installation, resulting in immediate cost savings after purchase. With solar lights, you are not tied to existing wiring and have the freedom to install them anywhere you like and as many as you like. Installing a solar lighting system usually takes several hours. By comparison, installing a traditional electric lighting system, where wiring can often be a challenge, takes days and even weeks. In addition, with a solar lighting system, you only need the most minimal set of tools and equipment (panels and lights).
- Safer - they are not connected to the mains.
- They are practically maintenance free - you should only change the batteries every 3-4 years or even more for lithium-ion batteries. The other components of the lamp often persist over time.
- Suitable for indoor (solar shed or solar panel) and outdoor (home garden and lane lighting, terrace or backyard decoration, public park, street) , parking lots, emergency lights, camping lights, traffic lights, etc.).
- If you have garden lights with a pointed base that are designed to be plugged into the ground, you can easily reposition them if you are not satisfied with the lighting layout of your garden or yard and install them at where there is more sun (helps the lamp to charge faster).
- Can save you money and reduce electricity bills, as they are “connected" to unlimited energy, not the local grid, so solar lighting is not easy affected by rising energy prices.
- Completely independent of the utility's AC grid - with solar lights, you don't lose power when the grid goes out.
- It is aesthetically pleasing and supports a wide range of shapes, sizes, colors and styles.
- Environmentally friendly - as a renewable energy source, solar panels reduce carbon emissions globally, which is recognized today as an important environmental issue.
- Automatic lighting - due to darkness detection circuit (sunlight sensor), no need to turn on/off manually.
- Withstands adverse weather conditions - rain, snow, hail, fog. In addition, they are suitable for all types of climates, whether hot or cold.
- Long life: Solar panels last about 20 years, Batteries can last 3 to 10 years, LED lighting sources have a lifespan of 50,000 to 100,000 hours.
- Some solar luminaires are equipped with an additional 5V USB socket for charging mobile phones and USB compatible devices.
When can solar lights be a challenge for you?
- Unfortunately, solar lights are not as cheap as traditional lighting sources.
- The main reason for the relatively high upfront cost is that the price of solar lighting systems is still relatively high - from 500,000 to 2,000,000 per complete luminaire depending on capacity and battery capacity.
- One of the main reasons is that the cost of solar panels is decreasing but not fast enough.
- The higher cost of solar lights is also due to the fact that LED lighting sources and storage batteries are more expensive than conventional bulbs and lead-acid batteries.
- If more expensive lamps (such as halogen lamps) or batteries (such as lithium-ion batteries) are used, the price may be even higher.
- In addition, when installing a solar lighting system, here are some important issues you want to consider:
- Daily amount of sunlight in your area is needed. Solar lights give you maximum efficiency as long as the solar cells receive enough sunlight each day.
- If the solar light is installed in a place where there is a low amount of sunlight, it will operate for a shorter daily period than recommended by the manufacturer.
- Solar lights are rarely installed on the roof (where the height is best). As a result, they are much more susceptible to shading (shading) than residential solar panel systems. Shading greatly reduces the electricity generated by the solar panel and requires frequent recharging, thereby reducing its performance and lifespan.
- Some solar lights are all-inclusive (solar arrays, led lights, storage batteries) that need to be mounted in an unshaded location onto the solar array surface. Fortunately, there are solar lighting systems that are powered by two separate units - the solar panel and the other (LED light, storage battery and controller). In such a case, only the panel needs to be installed in a good and unshaded location.
- Wind strength can be an issue you want to keep an eye on. Therefore, it is important to design your solar panel installation to withstand the maximum expected wind speeds in your area. Especially in the rainy season.
Currently on the market there are many types of solar lights (Solar Power Lights) with many different brands, models, functions, and capacities. However, one of the most reputable suppliers of solar lights in Vietnam is Intech Energy.
